4 Signs That Your Loved One Would Benefit from Home Care

Joe Armfield • Aug 16, 2023

Home care has many advantages, and it can vastly improve your loved one's life while allowing them to stay in their own home. However, it can be hard to know whether it's time for home care or whether it's right for your friend or relative. This article explains four signs that home care is something your loved one would benefit from.

1. They need help with personal care

A lot of services fall under the personal care umbrella, from help getting dressed to assistance with makeup to support with toileting. You may notice that your loved one needs a bit of help in these areas as they age. For example, you might notice that they no longer wear their favourite makeup and jewellery, don't get their hair cut any more or seem to avoid showering or bathing. Getting a home care provider to help them with personal care has many advantages.

One advantage of home care is that many people feel more comfortable having a friendly, professional deal with their personal care, rather than their child or other relative. Good personal care can also help them to feel attractive, clean and more like themselves, whether they need help with trimming their beard, curling their hair or simply washing their body and hair. This can help your loved one to feel more confident and social, improving their life.

2. Your loved one doesn’t eat properly

Eating a healthy, balanced diet is vital for older people, reduce the risk of developing diseases and illnesses and helping them maintain their weight. However, they can also stop eating properly, whether they find it too hard to plan meals, struggle to cook, or simply forget to eat due to dementia or memory loss. If your loved one is losing weight or seems to have an unbalanced diet, home care is ideal.

Home help professionals have many ways in how they can support your loved one, such as eating with them, using physical prompts and providing them with snacks. They will also be able to help your loved one with creating healthy, nutritious meals.

3. They have stopped going out

If you have noticed that your loved one has stopped going out, or has stopped doing their favourite activities, you might want to consider home care. Going out and doing fun activities is hugely beneficial to the mental health of older people. Work out what the root of your loved one's issues are, and speak to home care providers.

For example, they might need transport to activities or may need someone to come with them and keep them company. They might be scared of falls and need someone to walk with them. Whatever the case, home care can help broaden their horizons and get them out of the house.

4. Your loved one seems lonely or isolated

Perhaps you've noticed they don't talk much about their friends any more, or they seem to have stopped spending time with people. Some more subtle signs of loneliness include anger, changed sleep habits and increased buying habits.

Home care can help with loneliness in a range of ways, improving your loved one's life and helping them keep old friends and make new ones. Your loved one's home carer can provide them with conversation and companionship and can also help them to get out and meet new friends or facilitate meet-ups with old friends and family members.
